Who Is This Guy?

At the age of 20, he had a job that earned him more in a month than the average person earned in a year. He gave up that job for a chance to make more money in stocks. Within a year, he’d lost everything.

He quickly recovered by writing a book that became an international bestseller and propelled him to fame. Yet his contract was worthless, and he received a small payout while his publisher raked in money.

He continued his writing and eventually became a sought-after public speaker. His books and speeches were often sold-out affairs, and he soon found himself a multi-millionaire. He promptly invested in three different companies that failed spectacularly.

By the age of 59, he was bankrupt and humiliated.

Who was this man?

Mark Twain.

Most of us remember Twain as the witty writer and social commentator who changed American literature. The fact that we remember him this way has more to do with his talent than with his business acumen. In fact, when asked for business advice by a younger man, Twain replied, “To succeed in business, avoid my example.”

Actions speak louder than words, but not nearly as often.

-  Mark Twain

Twain is the perfect example of what I call the “cycle of success.” Few people who succeed do so on their first attempt, and if they do, they don’t stay successful for long. That’s because lasting success doesn’t happen in a moment. It’s the result of a lifetime of decisions. Our success is built on the foundation of our failures.

"I knew a man who grabbed a cat by the tail and learned forty percent more about cats than the man who didn't."
- Mark Twain

The cycle of success is simple: test, fail, learn, improve, repeat. Yet it’s the one in the middle that makes all the difference.

“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” - Pelé

If you listen to most people, they’ll tell you that one of the biggest keys to success is tenacity, the ability to get knocked down and get back up. We applaud people who try and fail and try and fail and try and fail…though if you aren’t learning from your failures, how does repeating the same failure help? That’s not tenacity – that’s stubborn foolishness!

Will Rogers said,
"It ain't what a man don't know that gets him in trouble.
It's what he knows that ain't so."

Tenacity is useless unless you’re learning something from the effort. Learning allows you to move past the obstacles and challenges that would otherwise hold you back. So how can you shift from stubborn to tenacious? Here are three things you need to do:

  1. Ask questions – You never learn if you don’t ask questions. Ask yourself, ask a co-worker, ask someone further ahead on the journey, but just make sure you’re seeking information that you may be missing.
  2. Reflect on the answers – What makes questions valuable is what you’re able to extract from the answers. To get the full benefit, you need to spend time thinking about what you’ve learned.
  3. Make the connections – After you’ve reflected on what you’ve heard, you need to make connections to your situation. Whether you apply the advice you received, develop a new insight into your situation, or just adjust your perspective, making connections between your circumstances and the answers you’ve found is the way to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

Where are you at in the cycle of success?

Are you in the testing phase, trying something new for the first time? Are you in the failing phase, watching things break apart? Maybe you’re in the learning phase, trying to figure out what happened? Or you could be in the improving phase, making the changes you think will take you to the next level.

No matter where you find yourself in the cycle, take a moment and be grateful. Gratitude isn’t something you feel, it’s something you choose. Choose to be grateful that wherever you are, you have the ability to make the most of the situation.

When you choose to be grateful, you’ll find your foundation for success even stronger.
