Is Your Pond Big Enough For Your Growth?

I heard it said once,

if you put a pumpkin in a jug when it’s the size a walnut, it will never get bigger than the jug. I believe that can happen to a person’s thinking. Don’t let it happen to you.

When I was a young man, I reached a point a decade into my career when I realized I needed to make a change.

  1. I wasn’t able to move up in the ranks.
  2. I didn’t feel challenged or enjoy what I was doing.
  3. There was nowhere else I wanted to go in that particular organization.
  4. No one else was moving up.
  5. People were not friendly or affirming.

It was time for a change—and not just a change of place. I needed to make a change within myself too. These changes come in pairs, my friend. You have to know yourself and assess whether you’re getting what you need from your environment. You also have to be willing to change your attitude and your beliefs along the way.

What I’m getting at is this: You’re going to reach certain points in your life when you need to make changes. In the book The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth, it is known as the Law of Environment.

Here we Grow,
"Hang out with those who have a common FUTURE with you;
not a common past."

You see, growth thrives in conducive surroundings. If you know you’re not in an environment that’s helping you grow, then it’s time to make a change. Change your environment and yourself, and growth will be faster and more successful.

BIG fish + small pond = HUGE problem.

If you know you need to make a change in your surroundings, how do you know what to move toward?

What are the hallmarks of a better, more conducive environment?

Here’s what I consider when it’s time to assess my environment and determine if I’m in a place that’s helping me grow or holding me back:

  • Others are ahead of me.
  • I am continually challenged.
  • My focus is forward.
  • The atmosphere is affirming.
  • I’m often out of my comfort zone. I wake up excited.
  • Failure is not my enemy.
  • Others are growing.
  • People desire change.
  • Growth is modeled and expected.

If most of these statements are true of where you are and who you are, then you are probably in a wonderful environment for growth, so keep going. If most of these statements aren’t true or you can’t say for sure, then it might be time for a change. If so, look for places where you can improve in the areas that are missing for you.

Just be aware, my friend, if you put a pumpkin in a jug when it’s the size of a walnut, it will never get bigger than that jug. That can happen to a person’s thinking.

Don’t let it happen to you.

As you examine your current environment and state of mind, answer these questions to find out more about what you might be looking for:

  1. What nourishes me?

  2. What keeps me going and excited?

  3. What sustains me over time?

Think about your answers and then, don’t be afraid to find a bigger pond.
