Building Fortresses Unaware

Once a friend retold the story of the Three Little Pigs.  The vulnerable and frightened pigs sought refuge in the house of straw, and the big bad wolf, of course, huffed and puffed and blew the house down.  They finally built a house of bricks and were safe from the wolf.  No matter how he huffed and puffed, he could not blow the house down.  Then my friend said, "You know, the brick house may have kept the wolf out, but it also kept the pigs in."

It's like that sometimes.  We try to protect ourselves from the dangers of the world, only to find ourselves, prisoners, of our own fear.  And, whenever we are unable to forgive, we actually build a fortress that isolates us as well as protects us.  It may feel easier to be defensive, but it is not.  I have come to believe that it is preferable to risk than to protect.  I'd rather chance the hurt than separate myself from the goodness, from the unknown, from the possibilities, from the wild and unpredictable nature of life, from love and relationships.  Enormous energy is consumed protecting ourselves from the "maybes" and the "what ifs."  That is why fear consumes us.  But because everything is possible, there is much energy in love.  Fear depletes, diminishes, lessens the magic and the spark in life.  Love affirms and multiplies all that is good.  Fear is dark.  Love is light.

We think that not to forgive is to protect ourselves, like armor surrounding the very vulnerability of the soul.  But it is not so.  There will always be vulnerability.  The soul is created that way.  There will always be hurt, and there will always be a chill in the air as the wind shift and the night falls.  For there are seasons in nature and in the nature of the human spirit

To forgive is to see the difference between protection and isolation.
