Forgiveness - Finding God and Restoring Wholeness

Forgiveness is like a bridge.  It carries you over an expanse to the side of life that is softer, kinder, easier to bear.  It is a shift of perspective, a new way of seeing our world, a different way of experiencing our inner life.  If life is really a journey, then forgiveness is the main avenue, a path to life renewed.  Along the way, there are stepping-stones to carry us through:  loss, anger, acceptance, forgiveness, learning, and restoration.  With each step, a new perspective is gained.

Forgiveness is often understood as an act of unselfish, unconditional love, an act in which we learn to 'forgive and forget'.  There should be no forgetting of evil acts, no condoning of offense, sin, hatred.  To forget is to run the risk of allowing these evils to happen again.  Yet at the same time, to hold within us the sorrow and pain of every offense diminishes our lives.  Resentment, anger, and fear must be released from within us so that we may restore our inner light, regain a sense of life's purpose, and reinvigorate our energy and optimism, so we can live with goodness and love.

Jesus told the story of "The Prodigal Son" (Luke 15:11).  This Father had two (2) sons, yet the younger had the audacity to demand his inheritance from his Dad!  What gave him that entitlement knowing that his father was still alive?!  Preposterous!!  Yet, out of love, the father gave it to him knowing that soon and very soon, he would squander it and return home.  He got the money, and off he went a whoring!  The son 'fell' while yet in the father's house; he fell at the moment he 'desired' the father's goods without the father's company, and it only needed a few days to find him in the 'far country'.  Backsliding begins in the 'heart' and very soon, places the 'feet' with the 'swine'.  Sin will take you further than you want to go, and cost you more than you can afford to pay.  Satan does not replenish; he only uses and abuses.  In the Devil's country, nothing is given, everything must be bought, and bought at a terrible price!

When he 'came to himself' and decided to go home his father was waiting with 'open arms' to welcome his son. Although he was dirty and filthy the father saw 'his son' not his condition and ran and kissed him!  Hallelujah!!  Grace ran to kiss the Prodigal in his rags, and Righteousness hasted to dress him in its robe (11 Cor.5:21).  This is how our Heavenly Father feels about us, He's waiting and pleading for us to come back Home.
