The Demographics/Social Media

Why Online Reviews Are Important To Your Business

“Reading reviews to make a purchase decision is now a common ritual among US shoppers highlighting the need for brands to monitor reviews left by their customers.”

Some highlights from the first series as to why reviews are important:

92 percent of consumers read online reviews when looking for a local business

42 percent of consumers won't use a business with less than a three-star rating

68 percent of consumers will form an opinion about your local business after reading just 1-6 online reviews”

Today we are looking at the demographics of those reading reviews before they decide on where they will buy. And how social media plays a part of the review process.

When you look at age and gender as to whom reads those reviews, surprisingly both genders are at 78%. Millennials, 18 to 34 years of age are at 79% and 80% of baby boomers read them. Seniors 55 and above, are actively reading reviews too.

Review Monitoring states that, “three in four shoppers now read online reviews before making a purchase”

On reading those reviews, one factor stands out in one group and that is in household income. The more they earn, the more they read and use reviews to decide yes or no on a purchase.

“Households with children under 18 are more likely to read online reviews (81%) the households who don’t have children (76%).

Brands seeking to influence affluent shoppers and family with children need to invest in tracking online reviews with a view to drive this segment towards the most relevant and useful reviews. One of the ways to do so is to help them discover reviews through social media.”

“All five social media platforms allow brands to advertise. Positive online reviews can be used as content for ads on these platforms. Brands can monitor online reviews left by their customers to pick the best content for social media ads.”

With 3 out of 4 using reviews on determining who they will buy from, we can take those comments for our guide to reach the wow factor and closer to a five star rating with a good average. All steps of their experience should be reviewed and changes implemented smoothly.

Now is the time to check the review status of your competitor and track them. Are they paying attention? Making the necessary changes? Is there a trend?

This series will resume on Monday, February 11th. We will look at gender and what are the product categories they read reviews about and what major online business has the most trust on providing reviews.

A special thanks to and to for providing accurate, up to date information with good detail.
