The Real Facts about Lung Cancer

Dr. Dasari explains the facts about lung cancer.

Lewisville, TX, Sep 24, 2018 –The growth of abnormal lung cancer cells usually starts off in cells lining the air passages. The abnormal cells then divide and spread to form tumors which later undermine the ability of the lung to provide oxygen to the bloodstream. Malignant tumors spread to other body parts through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream.

“Primary lung cancer begins in the lungs while secondary lung cancer can originate from any part of the body and spread to reach the lungs,” explained Dr. Neeraja. “The two are treated separately since they are regarded as different types of cancers.”

Below are lung cancer’s real facts:

•    Smoking seems to be lung cancer's leading risk factor – This is a fact, but smoking is not the only leading cause. Asbestos, radon, air pollution, cancer-causing agents, family history, and radiation therapy to the lung are also factors.

•    About forty percent of African American men are more likely to develop lung cancer.

•    Although it’s a serious disease, lung cancer can be treated and cured, especially if detected early. It’s important to get the necessary support after diagnosis.

•    Diagnosis of respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, COPD, emphysema or pneumonia may elevate the risk of developing lung cancer.

•    The advances in research have improved the survival of lung cancer through screening and targeted therapies.

•    Physical activity has been found to reduce the risk of lung cancer by more than 20 percent. Exercise is known to improve the function of the lungs and reduce the dangers of developing other diseases.

"Once lung cancer cells are detected, an examination is performed to detect if the cells are non-small cell or small cell lung cancer," continued Dr. Neeraja. “In this way, the physician will be able to tailor the treatment appropriately.”
