Blogging To Build Your Reputation Online And Bond With Your Audience

Do you have a blog. If you do then, congragulations.  Blogging is a great way to share your content, build your reputation as an expert in your niche, show off your real personality, and get people to know like and trust you.

So here I am running a successful freelance business I’ve built from scratch.  In a given week I’m:

  • designing,
  • coaching,
  • communicating with clients,
  • scheduling calls,
  • following up on previous conversations,
  • honing my skills,

planning for the future.

If I didn’t have a fantastic approach to blogging, I’d be drowning in the work and getting nowhere.

…but I do. :)

Do you want to know my secret?

It’s this.

I only do things on my blog - and online - that will have a long-lasting effect.

Here’s what this looks like in real-life terms:

I focus all of my on-blog energy into creating amazing content that will bring in new readers for months after I hit “publish.”  It’s known as “Cornerstone Content” or “Evergreen Content.”  Many experts will tell you to at least make sure you’re writing some evergreen content.  I make sure it’s ALL evergreen.

That means I don’t publish every week, or even every two weeks.  I wait for inspiration for just the right way to frame the very most helpful information, and then I write and edit until it’s fantastic.

Let’s flip that idea around - are you hitting “publish” three times a week just because someone said it would bring you more traffic?  You’re likely either (1) slaving away over a hot computer for *way* too many hours each week, or (2) writing content that’s…ahem…not all that spectacular.

So we have the actual blogging part covered.  Let's move on to...

BEING SOCIAL (aka Relationship Building) - 39%

Now, this is the part people sometimes confuse with content promotion, but there’s a big difference.  “Being social” doesn’t mean tweeting about your post 30 times in 48 hours.  It doesn’t mean asking all your Facebook friends to share your post with all their followers, either.

It means getting to know people.

I write and respond to emails from my amazing readers.

I hang out on IBO,Twitter and retweet people who are doing amazing things.

I tell people a heartfelt thank you for sharing my posts.

I hang out with other designers on Skype and build relationships with people who know WAY more than me.

I send Starbucks gift cards to people who have inspired me, taught me, or helped me do my job better.

And a few times a year, I go to a conference and actually rub elbows with my readers and my role models alike.

Are you spending your promotional time online wisely, or are you just standing on a virtual street corner, waving a big Pinterest-optimized graphic and yelling, “HEY! LOOK AT ME!”

“Being social” is a key part of growing your blog…and if you do it right, you’ll be forging genuine relationships online that are based on giving instead of taking.  So in the long run, everyone wins.

...and now for the third part of running my blog, which is:

After I finish writing a post and hit “publish,” I spend approximately 5 minutes promoting it.

I pin it on Pinterest.
I tweet it.
I post it on Facebook
I write a personal note to my lovely subscribers to let them know about it.

Those few tasks are enough to let my close-knit community know I’ve just published a post.  From there, I rely on all the incredible time and energy I poured into Step 1 (publishing) and Step 2 (relationship building) and trust that if my post is great - if it’s going to help people see things differently or strike a chord with my readers - my readers will do the promoting for me.

I don’t get offended if nobody comes to see my post.

Frankly, if nobody comes to see my post because it’s not great, I’m going to revisit it and MAKE it great.  And I don’t move on to writing the next post until I’m proud of the one I’ve already done.

So that’s my Secret Sauce for harnessing my ADD tendencies and prioritizing what I do online: only do things that will have a long-lasting effect.  It makes it easy for me to “toss out” a thousand other things I could be doing and only focus on what’s going to grow my blog in the long run.

So now that you know my secret, does that change your mind about some of the things you’ve been doing on your blog lately?

If so, I’d love to hear about it.
