How I Discovered Reiki ...

What is Reiki?

“Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energywork using spiritually guided life force energy.”

** No such thing as a bad situation … **

In 1981, I was in a car accident. I got hit by a drunk driver on the driver’s side of my car. The impact of the crash damaged some muscle tissue in my left shoulder. It caused limited mobility in my arm.

Back in 1993, I found a good massage therapist with whom I had regular weekly treatments for about 9 months. I actually did not go to him because of my shoulder. I found him because he was well versed in a number of massage techniques. And I wanted to experience and learn about various kinds of massage modalities, such as Deep Tissue, Swedish massage, Trager, and Bowen Technique.

During one of my sessions, Kent proceeded to stretch my left arm a certain way while I was on the massage table. I immediately shouted, “Wait! You can’t do that!” He asked me why and I told him about my shoulder.

Kent asked if he could try something that would not involve pulling or stretching. And I agreed. He asked me to stand up and stretch both of my arms over my head. It was very obvious that I could not fully extend my left arm as straight as I could my right arm. Then he asked me to get back on the massage table. He pulled up a chair beside the massage table, sat down, and put both of his hands gently on my left should for about 20 minutes. He never said a word. I could feel his hands getting extremely warm. Experiencing subtle energies was nothing new to me. I intuitively knew something was happening, so I just soaked it in.

Then he asked me to stand back up and stretch my arms over my head. To my amazement I was able to lift both arms over my head at the same time with no pain in my left shoulder. I said, “Wow! What did you do?” Well, for about two hours we had a nice conversation about Reiki!

** When the student is ready, the teacher will appear … **

I was ready to learn more about Reiki and I wanted to become a Reiki practitioner like Kent. The next day I was talking to a good friend of mine on the phone and she said, “I had a great weekend! I just completed levels I & II of Reiki training and I’m looking for someone to practice on.” I told her about my recent experience with Kent and I asked, “When can we get together?”

I set up an appointment. She took me through a complete Reiki session which lasted about 1 1/2 hours. I absolutely loved it. Something great inside me happened that I could not fully explain. Then I asked her about her Reiki instructor. And I ended up completing a Reiki weekend class for myself.

That’s how it all began. Later I studied to become a Reiki Master under the Usui Reiki Ryoho Lineage with two different Reiki Masters. I’ve treated over 250 clients since that time and taught several Reiki classes for Levels I & II.

Today I don’t teach classes as much, but I do focus on healing myself. I believe that the best way to help heal those around us is to begin by working on ourselves. When we change our inner world everything around us changes.

That’s one of the secrets in life!
