3 Critical Mistakes Made by the New Christian, Part 3

Find Part 1 and Part 2 here: Let's wrap it up as we focus on building a firm foundation or even re-tooling some of the things we THOUGHT were in proper order. The final Critical Mistake a young Christian makes is... C. Not Recognizing your Gift and its Application We all come on this earth to make an impact in the given area that God plants us. For some it may be in a nursing home or a classroom or a government job. In any case we have certain skills and talents that are helpful for us to earn a living and create a lifestyle of success. When I talk about your gift, I am not referring to these professional traits used in the workplace. When I talk about your gift, I am referring to that special seed planted in you by God, from the very beginning, to help you build up His kingdom. It is a special and unique characteristic that when unleashed, builds up the spirit of other saints and those thirsty for the Good News. Let me give you an idea of what these gifts look like: GIVING // LEADERSHIP // DISCERNMENT // PROPHECY // KNOWLEDGE // EVANGELISM // EXHORTATION // MERCY // HELPS // MIRACLES // SERVICE // WISDOM // FAITH Some of these gifts are outward and open - everyone can see them and their results - others are backstage and behind the scenes and sometimes are not even noticed. But the one thing they have in common is that people’s spirits and souls are improved, lightened, encouraged, and advanced when these gifts are exercised. This is what God says about our gifts: Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms (1 Pet 4:10) And here are the points of frustration: ** Some Christians do not know what their gift is, therefore they cannot exercise it. ** Other Christians do indeed know what their gift is, but they refuse to exercise it. Many Christians waste time exercising the wrong gift (this means they are operating in an area where they have no business) - they are usually grumpy, frustrated, or bothered by their commitment - it’s like a short stop operating out in left field. Take a moment to reflect on what you think your gift is - what area do you seem to operate in naturally and with ease? Is it mercy - extra kind to and forgiving of others? What about helps - do you step in and fill the gap not caring who gets credit for the successes? Maybe it’s wisdom - do you seem to be in tune to God’s direction and guidance? walking in step with His guidelines for your life? Or possibly you have the gift of faith - holding on when everyone else lets go - seeing what others don’t see and trusting beyond reason? I do not know what your gift is - I know what mine is and I know that God gives you the seed and expects you to water it and make the most out of it. My gift is Teaching, so I prepare and research and enjoy sharing God’s Word as well as other points of interest to various students. Maybe teaching is your gift too. Here is the cool part of your relationship with God. If after thinking and reflecting even during these moments - if you do not know what your gift is... Just ask God. He wants you to know even more than you do. He wants you to be successful in operating this particular side of your character. Exercising your gift says, “Thank you God for this investment you have placed inside of me. I will not let it rust; I will not let it go to waste - I value my gift because I value you. Thank you for trusting me and using me to impact your people.” I encourage you to uncover, unleash, and apply your gift - there are many people, perhaps hundreds or even thousands, who are waiting to be touched by God through you. In closing, I want to encourage you to not to squander your access or waste your gifts. If God has called you to explore the treasures of the attic, be sure that you don’t build a shelter in the basement, kicking around old boxes and stepping on rusty nails. God wants you to be and do your very best - he is committing to doing His part and I am hoping and praying that you are committed to doing yours! All the Best, Coach Kim
