Bad Health Choices in the Urban Environment: It's a Set Up

I live in a typical Baltimore City Community. There is a mixture of races, businesses, incomes and home designs. My neighboring community is predominantly Black. I wonder if it is a coincidence that we have so many churches within a 1-mile radius - averaging almost per block. The thing that really marks this as a typical urban sector is the abundance of fast food establishments I could walk to in just 15 minutes.

Between my home and the county line, about 1 mile away, I am accosted with a corner chicken joint, Popeye's, Wendy's, Dunk' n Donuts, McDonald's (newly expanded), Subway, and at least 4 Chinese food or Sub spots. My daughter casually pointed out that she'd even counted 6 liquor stores.

What is up with this?

Where are the organic markets - where are the Wegman type options, offering a plethora of fresh, wholesome choices? What about a decent restaurant that serves freshly prepared, non-processed food? Do they exist? Of course, they do. Do they exist in my community? Of course, they don't.

Why not?

Because we are driven by ignorance, habit, and convenience. These 3 demons will allow us to do a "dead man's float" in a sea of mediocrity and we do not realize we're actually heading for a treacherous waterfall.

Until we demand better, we will at the bare minimum that passes for food and we will continue to be the most overfed and undernourished people in the world. In a world of fried chicken, processed patties and cheese steak subs, it is a wonder we are even functional. A more apt assessment would be "The Walking Dead".

Are you destined for the crashing waterfall or can you take immediate action to get and stay on the right health track? What steps can you take?

1. Start making positive changes in your household - think Long Term and not just at how good that sugar/fat/salt "treat" will be to your taste buds.

2. Set a new standard and kick the fast food joints to the curb - occasional visits notwithstanding.

3. Stop eating an abundance of sugars and processed foods - they weaken your immune system, which of course is your built-in defense mechanism against illness. You may not need on it today - but when you call on it, you don't want it to look like a piece of swiss cheese - vulnerable and full of holes.

4. Drink. More. Water. Healthy water -  Life-Giving Water. Go to this site and listen to an alarming audio interview that alerts you to the body's innate capability to heal itself when given the right resources. Some of us are holding out on our bodies and when a crisis comes, we expect it to perform a miracle.

We can do better than that.
