The Drum Major Instinct

Leading yourself to higher ground is always an option. We often get caught up in the doldrums, the riptides of life and we are found at the end of our journey, waving a proverbial white flag. We have ransomed our hopes and dreams and authentic purpose and we rationalize our actions by looking to our left and right and seeing that our peers have done the same. So we say we are no better or worse than them, as we close our eyes at night, resting up to mount our horses the next day and ride into the same mindless, routine, unfulfilling assignment. At some point in time, a few of us will say… There’s got to be more than this. We all have the drum major instinct. We all want to be important, to surpass others, to achieve distinction, to lead the parade. … And the great issue of life is to harness the drum major instinct. It is a good instinct if you don’t distort it and pervert it. Don’t give it up. Keep feeling the need for being important. Keep feeling the need for being first. But strive to be the first in love. Let that be the tape that breaks across your chest. Strive to be the first in moral excellence. The first in generosity. The first in taking responsibility to set an example of excellence, some plan you would be proud to share with others, with the next generation. Now I am not saying it is impossible to do when you have your nose to the grindstone, but it is very, very challenging. You MUST carve time out... to THINK… to PLAN… to DREAM… If you don’t you will miss your window of opportunity – and you will have no one to blame but yourself. Join us in the journey – retire for at least 15 minutes each day so that you can sharpen your saw. Embracing the Inner Drum Major Instinct, Coach Kim
