Good Riddance Obamacare

“I ain’t missing you at all” is the chorus line in a John Waite song from 1984 but unlike the song, when it comes to the so called “Affordable Care Act” - better known as Obamacare - I really will mean it.

While the law hasn’t yet been repealed and replaced I’m sure it will be, and good riddance.

Here’s my day today as an agent trying to renew an Obamacare policy that I sold LAST year.

This family was referred to me from an agent who had politely refused to sell Obamacare because the system was so bad and the commissions so low it didn’t make economic sense to him to try to sell it.

I understood the agent's point of view but I stayed in the business to serve the customers of the agents I serve. About 15 agents refer this business to me and I do my best to help their clients through the system.

Today was a gem…

Rohan (not his real name) is an immigrant from India that owns and operates a restaurant in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He and his brother and both wives work long hours in a competitive market to make decent money.

I helped Rohan get insurance last year for he and his wife and 2 kids. He used my government approved website in November of 2015 and, with some coaching and advice from me on the phone, he enrolled in a plan with a $6,000 deductible for $659 a month. It wasn’t what he wanted or as “rich” a plan as he had before Obamacare but it was what he could afford.

6 weeks ago he got his renewal paperwork for this year. But his youngest child wasn’t on the policy - because - we found out - the US government had decided she should be on Medicaid (the plan for poor folks) and she had NEVER been added to the policy last year. His OTHER child, mysteriously, was on the plan…

Neither Rohan or I had any record of being notified. So right away we obtained some non-compliant coverage to protect her for the month of January while we “sorted things out”.

Then last week Rohan received a notice from his Insurer (an Obamacare Co-op) that his wife was being excluded for coverage this year because “she was ineligible” (no other explanation).

After a couple calls to the Co-op I found out that THEY had no idea why that why the wife was .being cancelled, they were just taking orders from Healthcare.gov - the Obamacare beaurocracy so WE HAD TO CALL THEM instead of his “insurance company”

After just 6 minutes on hold I invested 68 more minutes talking to the folks at HealthCare.gov about this case…

The first lady, let’s call her Juanita, God bless her, had serious challenges with the English language although I’m sure her Spanish is far better than mine.

After 20 minutes of painstakingly slow explanation of the situation Juanita was ready to hang up on me because I did not have the wife’s social security number (even though Juanita acknowledged I am the agent and I did have the wife’s birthdate and policy number) but under the law - that wasn’t enough for her to talk to me...

Fortunately I was able to reach Rohan by phone just before his dinner rush and after 20 more minutes on a 3 way phone call Juanita granted me permission to ask questions on Rohan’s behalf about what was screwed up and Rohan hung up to handle rush hour at his restaurant.

That’s when Juanita tells me Rohan’s wife was cancelled (according to her computer) back in April of LAST year because the Government couldn’t verify her citizenship (she’s been a citizen for about 7 years).

Right after that Juanita explained she couldn’t help me and transferred me to a supervisor….

Jose the supervisor (we’ll call him) had, God bless him, a similar challenge with English. I wish I was kidding. Very polite guy.Couldn’t pronounce my name or Rohan’s...

Jose explained that, according to his records, Rohan’s wife had been informed by mail (he thought) 3 times to provide copies of her citizenship paperwork and the wife’s coverage had been cancelled May 1st of LAST YEAR.

I told Jose that neither I or the client had any record of that and furthermore the Obamacare co-op had continued to charge Rohan $659 a month EVERY MONTH in 2016 - which he had paid and I had record of.

Jose gave me the classic Government employee response that he would have to refer us (Rohan and I) back to the Obamacare Co-Op about getting the overcharged premiums back but that in order to “fix things” and get the wife and daugher covered by February 1st....

I would have to get Rohan back on the phone, call back in before midnight THIS Sunday and start all over again!

I won’t miss Obamacare. - at all...

PS - If THAT wasn’t enough I had one of those “tell us how we are doing”  surveys after my hour on the phone with Healthcare.gov. It consisted of an incredibly annoying 5 questions - each of which was repeated so that you had to answer each question 2 times - yikes…

PPS - If You want to just talk to a doctor in America, it’s harder than anytime in my 57 years so you might want to spend a few extra dollars a month to have a doctor available to you on the phone 24 hours a day 365 days a week (this is NOT “compliant”) but for less than $1 a day it’s a lot of peace of mind
