That "teach 'em to fish" thing

I’ve been investing a lot of my time in building systems for insurance agents the last couple of months.

 

The idea is to teach agents that sell one type of insurance, say automobile insurance for example, to sell other types of insurance to their clients.

 

Video is the modern teaching tool, so I am shooting a lot of video explaining to insurance agents how to sell a variety of products and services to their clients.

 

Still, I’m aware of the statistical facts of business (and life)...

 

Of all of the insurance agents that I connect with, most will agree with what I’m telling them and some of them will invest the time and effort to studying the training material my team is creating BUT…

 

80 percent of them won’t take any action - AT ALL -  to increase their income using what we teach them…

 

If you go online you can learn that the saying, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" is not from the Bible.

 

It is an old Chinese proverb

 

It’s still true, mostly, but it leaves out an important part and that’s…

 

Hunger (Also known as motivation)

 

My insurance agent audience will take action in direct proportion to how motivated they are and the motivation is very personal, very individual.

 

For some, the “hunger” IS financial. They realize they need more money than they are making to send their child to school, pay for their mom’s nursing home cost or buy that “dream home”.

 

Other insurance agents are mostly concerned about their clients. Their motivation is knowing that they provided “complete service”. For some, that’s because they really think that’s the right thing to do.

 

For other agents, the motivation is that they fear that if THEY don’t offer other coverage to their client's somebody else might and take their customer away from them.

 

In whatever you are doing, remember that…

 

Don’t try to teach everybody. “Prepare the curriculum” perhaps (that’s what I’m doing) just don’t expect all the “students” to show up or be enthusiastic.

 

Consider the population of America. About 25 percent of the richest country in the world are “on the dole” (taking welfare) in a country and at a time where it’s extremely easy to learn almost any trade or profession.

 

These american’s just aren’t “hungry” at this time. They don’t want to “learn how to fish” because they have free fish already and for them, that’s “good enough”.

 

Concentrate on the “hungry crowd”, the ambitious. Teach them what they need to know and you’ll never have to worry where your next meal is coming from.
