Life Isn't Complicated, we make it so...

 

 


I am a huge advocate of living life with simplicity. Far too often we buy into the false idea that life is complicated by design and therefore must be lived in a complicated way.

Human beings are perplexing, intricate, involved and fascinating. And life? Well, when you think about it, it's pretty simple. On a very basic level of functioning, we eat, sleep and breathe. Everything else could be considered as extra-curricular. Without these fundamental functions we could not survive, they literally keep us alive and if done correctly can ensure a healthier existence.

 

Are you covering the basics, sleeping, eating and breathing?

Unfortunately, our priorities are not always well placed and the failure to cover the basics correctly, quickly leads to an unbalanced life which we then label as ' a complicated life'.
For example, burning the candle at both ends may seem justified if you want to get that project finished but at what price? Regularly compromising on quality sleep will free up some time to get more done, but have a lasting negative impact on your health. The average person needs at least 7-8 hours’ sleep; some of us need a little less. If you wake up in the mornings and feel 'well rested' then you're on the right track. If not, then you need to take a closer look at the issue in hand.

 

We live in a 'grab and go' world where fast food takes precedence over quality nutrition-rich foods. 3 square meals a day is now the exception rather than the rule. Is this because life is more complicated? No! We have always had 24 hours in the day and that's not going to change. What has changed however, is our priorities because we want everything to be faster and easier. The irony is, we create drama and complications in the process by failing to follow a few simple rules on eating in the right way.

 

Did you know that the simple act of taking a few deep breaths everyday can have a lasting positive impact on your health? The truth is, most people give very little or no thought to breathing, unless of course there is a problem. If you were to pay attention to your breathing, you are likely to discover that your regular pattern is not the diaphragm expanding, oxygen flooding experience that breathing should be. Instead you may have adopted a pattern of shallow breathing, consuming only enough oxygen to get by.

 

The combination of sleeping and eating well along with breathing fully can dramatically change the way we live our lives for the better. Taking care of the basics puts us in a stronger position to handle anything that may come our way. Life gets complicated when we fail to do the simple yet important things well.
