Finish Strong

Finish Strong.

When it comes to examples of people who are strong starters, I suspect that there are far more of them than strong finishers. Whether in business, sport or life in general, starting something new can be invigorating, momentous and inspiring. The buzz of leaping out of the starting blocks (metaphorically speaking) propels a strong starter forward giving them a promising outset.

"There are better starters than me but I'm a strong finisher."

~Usain Bolt

The quote above is a profound statement from Usain Bolt (fastest 100 and 200 metres sprinter ever recorded). He reminds us that being the best starter does not determine one's finish. Though it may take great skill and focus to start well, ultimately it's the finish that will be remembered in the long run. In life we often put all of our energy and thought into how we will begin a project and neglect to think about how it will end. Being a strong starter certainly has its benefits but finishing strong is what secures the final victory.

Perhaps in the past you have reasoned that a slow start compared to  the fast start of others was responsible for your downfall. However, it is quite evident that it's what you do between the start and the finish that really counts. The strong starter risks running out of steam if they lack staying power to keep up the momentum, whereas a strong finisher will increase their momentum as they progress.

As we draw close to the ending of another year, it's a great time to reflect. Did you start the year strong or was it a slow and laborious beginning?
Do you know what? It really doesn't matter how 2016 started out for you, all that really matters is how you intend to finish it. Make the decision to be a strong finisher of the year. All the difficulties and disappointments were just lessons in disguise, preparing you for the next big race in the new year. Are you going to cross the finish line of 2016 victorious or settle for second, third or even last place? Many will not finish what they have started but you have a choice to be counted, by not just finishing but finishing strong.
