Broken Links - How to Avoid Them

If you were to do a search on the words 'Broken Links,' your search would lead you to the hundreds of explanations and solutions for what's otherwise known as 'link rot', 'link death' or 'link breaking' all terminologies to describe [a connection in an HTML document to a URL that is not working properly, esp. because it goes to a Web page that is no longer available or which has moved to another server]

Now I must confess that this PR is not going to offer you tried and tested expert advice on the best 'broken link checker' out there or how to edit your URL on WordPress, oh no I’ll leave this to those who specialize in that area. What I want to focus on is the 'broken links' of a different sort.

"A chain is no stronger than it's weakest link, and life after all is a chain".

~ William James

The quote above, describes life as a series of links forming a chain and the strength of that chain being completely dependent on the strength of its individual links. I love this analogy because it is very easy to see how the different areas of our lives can be represented in the form of interlocking links. Family, Health, Work and Spirituality are all separate areas, but intrinsically interlinked in a chain that is - our life.

It's true to say that most people are very good at strengthening particular areas of their lives but often at the expense of another area. For example, a driven entrepreneur may focus on the task of building his or her empire to ensure financial freedom by working long punishing hours. Unfortunately, the downside of this activity is that family time takes a back seat. By focusing on one area alone, we leave others vulnerable to becoming weak and before you know it, this weak link begins to affect the whole chain - our lives.

If we focus on our health but neglect our finances, we suffer. If we focus on our spirituality but neglect our health we suffer still. The broken links that appear in our lives do not materialize by accident; they are not some form of twisted fate but a direct result of failing to strengthen that particular link. We kid ourselves that we are creating an unbreakable chain by taking care of link 1, 5 and 7 but what of the links inbetween. Do they not count in the overall durability of our chain?

Be your own broken link checker.

Just like a piece of software or online service that will check for broken links (verify a link) you too have the capacity to do the same in your life. Checking your links means paying close attention to the different areas of your life. Sacrificing one area of your life for another will only weaken the chain that is your life and failing to maintain all areas is sure to lead to eventual corrosion. Every area of your life is significant and important to the next. Do not allow 'link rot' to set in. Remember that the overall condition of your chain (life) is what really counts. By focusing your efforts on finding balance you will have a life that functions on an optimal level.
