Get a Head Start on your New Year's Resolution.

If you have ever committed to a personal goal or project at the beginning of a new year you're not alone. Planning for change in the year ahead is a practice that can be traced back to ancient times. The Babylonians and the Romans both made promises to their Gods in preparation for a better more prosperous year. Creating a list of goals/resolutions is the easy part and many of us have no trouble finding things we wish to change.

However, the challenge with resolutions tends to be the ability to keep them. It all starts out well enough with boundless enthusiasm and a real desire to see it through but something happens a few days/ weeks/ months in, that derails your focus and before you know it.... it's all over.

A few years ago, the desire to be healthy and in shape became an overwhelming necessity for me. I felt I could no longer justify compromising on achieving a better, stronger and more energised existence. It was the month of November when things came to ahead and I decided there and then that I would take action.

Of course taking action was made all the more challenging because of the time of year when excess is the norm. I could have waited for January 1st to roll around before commencing on the journey to a better me, but I'm not a great believer in the magic of January 1st. The pressure and expectation that comes with the 1st day of a new year is immense and fraught with potential failure. It is the marathon race that so many wish to participate in but few have prepared for.

If you have new year's resolutions, why not get out of the blocks before the official race has even begun? Avoid adopting a WHEN THEN attitude i.e.; WHEN January arrives THEN I'll do what needs to be done..

Change is never convenient, infact inconvenience plays a major role in the winning formula for success. It's when the odds seem stacked against you, like achieving and maintaining a healthy weight during the holiday season, which most people would consider the worst time to embark upon such a journey. But somehow you actually succeed in dropping a few pounds because you made a conscious decision to be responsible and eat a 1/4 less than you would normally. You're not opting out of the festive fun but making a calculated decision to put less food on your plate, in your mouth and so the outcome is zero weight gain.

And if you could manage to lose weight or get into peak shape during the festive season, what are the odds that you will continue in this way throughout the rest of the year?  Well, suddenly the odds are looking pretty good, because just as everyone else is gearing up for the starting line you are well into the race and have jumped a few hurdles to boot.

For me personally, not only did I shed a few pounds but I surpassed my target and was able to sustain my new found energy. Why wait for the New Year to bring change? Instead, make change happen sooner rather than later.

Perhaps you too have committed to goals/resolutions in the past or have a new list committed to paper, whether it's to quit smoking, find a new  job, get out of debt, or make a lot of money, why wait? You might say 'Now is the worst time to look for a new job!' but hey, if you started now you would have an advantage over those who are waiting for the convenience of January 1st.
