Hibernation of the Human Kind

The winter months bring with it the cue for many animals to go into Hibernation or Torpor (light hibernation lasting anything from a few days to a few months). Hibernation is truly one of nature’s miracles and it's fascinating to learn how certain hibernating animals survive having a heart rate that drops by 90%, ice crystals form in their blood and other organs that temporarily shut down. These amazing animals enter a state of inactivity with the sole purpose to conserve energy in harsh times when there is little or no food to sustain them.


Hibernation however is not exclusive to just animal-kind, you could say that human-kind also undergoes a certain degree of hibernation. Though we do not cease activity altogether, the winter, with its much shorter days and longer nights also has an impact on us humans. It propels us to spend more time in the warmth of our homes, avoiding harsh weather conditions whenever possible. There is also a propensity to stock up on our favourite foods (especially of the comfort variety) for those dark winter evenings when we are glad to be 'in' rather than 'out' in the elements.


The above quote got me thinking about how we can also experience hibernation on another level other than just the physical. What about the hibernation of our minds? As our bodies slow down a little during the winter months, there is also a tendency for our minds to follow suit. However, I think we are missing a huge opportunity here. As the quote suggests, winter is in fact the perfect time to plot and plan for the warmer activity filled months ahead. While we nestle down in our homes with more than enough food (thanks to the holiday season) to satisfy our stomachs, we must also give great consideration to feeding our minds. When we nourish our minds, we nourish our dreams.

We can view the winter as 'down time,' or see it as the perfect time to plant our 'mind seeds.' What do I mean by mind seeds? Mind seeds are the very beginnings of a desired outcome, a dream. It's those initial thoughts that are planted in the stillness of a cold winter evening, when we are more inclined to sit conserving energy and think about the harvest we wish to reap in the spring. Come the spring we are eager to leap into action, but what good is this frenzy of activity if we have failed to plant our seeds by planning and plotting the desired outcome? Why not use this time of reduced outward activity to boost your inward activity, and think about what you want to reap when spring returns?
