Who Do You Think You Are?

If I were to ask the question "Who are you?" you would probably precede to describe to me, the 'image' of the person you believe yourself to be. That 'image' would be based on your opinion. And your opinion is nothing more than the product of past experiences good or bad. Fortunately or unfortunately as the case may be, these past experiences are very much shaped by the opinions other people have of you.

In short, the self-image is a self-portrait we carry around with us. Just like a painting, It may contain some degree of accuracy and even resemble us from a distance, but more often than not the self-image tends to be a distorted view of who we really are. This false picture may consist of many dimensions, for example the image we have of ourselves out in public could be in complete contrast and conflict with who we are in private.

"Self-image sets the boundaries of individual accomplishment".

- Maxwell Maltz

Why is the subject of self-image so pivotal to how much we accomplish in life?
The brilliant Maxwell Maltz quote above delivers the point so succinctly. It is a fact, that our daily actions are dictated by the self-image. And based on the self-image, these actions will come from a place of either confidence or insecurity. If we feel great about whom we are, our actions will reflect this. On the other hand if we are not happy with who we are it will also be revealed in our actions.

The burden of carrying a distorted and false self-image for years can wear us thin. Perhaps we were told by a well-meaning parent or teacher that we were not destined for greatness, that we should settle for a mediocre existence instead. Sadly, at a young impressionable age we don't dare question such a statement and adopt it as part of who we are. We soon form the identity of someone who feels undeserving of notable success and will refrain from taking action towards attaining any real accomplishments. As we progress into adulthood, these limiting boundaries will remain intact if the insecure self-image is not challenged.

How can we overcome a poor self-image?
In order to change the self-image, we must first change the opinion we hold of ourselves, and this can only be done by taking focused action. What do I mean by focused action?

Napoleon Hill addressed the subject of the self-image in 'Think and Grow Rich.' As part of the ‘Self-Confidence Formula', the reader is required to write down a detailed description of the person they desire to be. It is vital that we have a clear mental picture of the person we desire to become. This requires concentrated thought, as the clearer the picture you hold of that person, the more likely you are to achieve your goal.

Create the ideal self-image

Write a detailed statement (in present tense) describing the person you desire to become.
Descriptions should begin with, I have, I am, I do etc.
Make your statement come alive by using energising language, for example:

*I am so happy and grateful now that I have vibrant health and  amazing energy...
*I love to work out and go running every morning...
*I always enjoy quality time spent with those I love...
*I am amazed at how successful my business is and how money      seems to come to me so easily..
*I'm in the best mental and physical shape I've ever been in...
*I receive compliments on a daily basis for my work ethic and  positive energy...

You get the picture?

This very powerful exercise has the capacity to transform your self-image into the person you have only dared to dream you could be. By writing down a statement and saying it aloud once a day you are speaking this reality into being. You are reshaping and remodelling your self-image into the person you were destined to be all along.

Become the best you, by taking action and making it happen!
