Do it Right the First Time

We are all so busy busy busy, with too much to do and not enough time to do it in. Yet how many times have you found yourself having to re-do the very thing you didn't have time to do in the first place?

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?".

~John Wooden

The quote above is a reminder that in your haste to get a task or project done, you should consider whether you have the time to do it over. It's a common mistake to think you are saving time by forging full steam ahead. However, with the benefit of hindsight there is often the regret of not proceeding with more care and patience.

The thing about having to re-do the things that should have been done right the first time around, is that it often costs far more than just your time. There is sometimes an extra monetary expense to consider when starting afresh, with the added pressure and frustration of putting other tasks on hold until the current one is completed.

You may have one or two stern words with yourself and swear blind never to repeat the mistake again, but we all know how that usually turns out. So what's the solution?

Here are 3 ways to do it right the first time.

1.   Whatever the task or project, it's always wise to set a realistic time frame in which it will be completed. This way you are starting with time on your side and not time going against you. Having the right tools for the job will ensure the best use of you time and energy.

2.  Minimize your distractions. Avoid the temptation to do more than one task at a time. This is a false economy; as if the job is not done correctly then you're heading for a rerun. Focus on the task at hand until it is done.

3.  And finally, be patient. If you truly value your time make sure your efforts are focused to carry out the task efficiently and to the best of your ability. Your work is an expression of your character so make sure it represents you in the best light.
